Planting Instructions for a Double Flowering Plum
-
Choose the right location: Double flowering plum shrubs prefer well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade. Be sure to choose a location that meets these requirements.
-
Prepare the soil: Before planting, make sure to prepare the soil by removing any weeds or debris. If your soil is heavy clay or sandy, you may want to add organic matter such as compost or peat moss to improve its structure.
-
Dig the hole: Dig a hole that is 2 - 3 times wider and deeper than the shrub's root ball. This will give the roots room to spread out and establish themselves.
-
Plant the shrub: Carefully remove the shrub from its container, and loosen any tangled roots. Place the shrub in the hole, and make sure that the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil.
-
Backfill the hole: Fill in the hole with the soil you removed earlier, gently tamping down as you go. Make sure there are no air pockets around the roots.
-
Water the shrub: Water the shrub thoroughly to help settle the soil and remove any remaining air pockets, adding more soil if needed.
-
Mulch: Place a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base of the shrub to help retain moisture and insulate the roots. Be sure not to pack the mulch around the branches of your shrub.
-
Provide support: If your shrub is tall, you may want to stake it to provide support and help it stand upright.
Following these steps will help to ensure that your double flowering plum shrub is planted correctly and has the best chance of thriving.
